Fran

High Summer

She moved so fast
sometimes--in the house
and out and back in
in one rush--but unruffled--
just from her usual abounding energy
that one time
the dog sat up
and began barking
from sheer excitement

She's okay, isn't she? I had forgotten Al had passed and sent some holiday letter a couple of years ago, and she replied in a nice letter. This is a wonderful moment which shows the vicissitudes of actual human experience, from the senses through emotions to a considered consciousness, out of the articulated bits and pieces which make up the massif of our love.

Okay, in a sense: she died on Tuesday, in her sleep, her sons with her to the end, and "everything said that needed to be said," before the ALS became a torture.

Thanks, Kia, for putting that perfect poem where more people can read it. It's peerless, as she was.
